The School Year Is Underway—Now Is the Time to Lead with Intention

For many child care owners, September feels like a fresh start.

Families have returned from summer vacations. Classrooms are settling into new routines. Children are adjusting to new teachers and environments. Schedules are becoming more predictable. The energy of a new school year is in the air.

But while September often feels like the beginning of something new, it also presents an important opportunity to pause and evaluate.

The preparations you made over the past several weeks are now being put to the test.

What’s working?

What’s not?

What adjustments need to be made?

The strongest child care leaders don’t simply hope for a successful fall. They actively shape one. And that starts by paying attention to what is happening right now.

The First Few Weeks Reveal Everything

There is something powerful about the beginning of a school year. Small issues become visible. Gaps in communication start to appear. Processes are tested. Team dynamics become clearer. Family expectations emerge.

In many ways, September provides a real-world assessment of your business.

You may notice:

  • Enrollment processes that need improvement
  • Staffing challenges that require attention
  • Communication breakdowns
  • Operational bottlenecks
  • Areas where additional training is needed

Rather than viewing these as frustrations, view them as feedback.

Every challenge is providing information. The key is acting on that information before small issues become larger problems.

Are You Leading Proactively or Reactively?

One of the biggest differences between successful child care businesses and struggling ones is how leaders respond to challenges.

Reactive leaders spend their days putting out fires.

Proactive leaders look for patterns.

They ask:

  • Why is this happening?
  • What system contributed to this issue?
  • How can we prevent this from happening again?

The beginning of the school year often exposes recurring problems.

Instead of treating each issue as an isolated event, look for root causes.

The solution is rarely working harder.More often, the solution involves improving systems, communication, training, or accountability.

Evaluate Your Enrollment Momentum

Many centers experience enrollment changes as families settle into new routines.

Some classrooms fill quickly. Others may have unexpected openings. Waitlists shift. Family needs evolve. Now is an excellent time to review your enrollment picture.

Ask yourself:

  • Are all classrooms performing as expected?
  • Are inquiries being followed up on consistently?
  • Is our waitlist current and accurate?
  • Are tours converting into enrollments?
  • What enrollment trends are emerging?

Successful enrollment isn’t about what happened last month. It’s about maintaining momentum moving forward.

The strongest centers treat enrollment as an ongoing process rather than a seasonal task.

Check In With Your Team

The first few weeks of the school year can be exciting.

They can also be exhausting.

Your staff are adapting to new classroom dynamics, new children, new families, and increased expectations.

This is an ideal time to reconnect. Schedule conversations. Ask questions. Listen carefully. Find out what support your team needs.

Many leadership problems can be avoided simply by creating opportunities for communication.

Employees who feel heard are more likely to stay engaged, committed, and invested in your center’s success.

Strong cultures aren’t built during staff meetings alone. They’re built through consistent leadership and meaningful relationships.

Review the Systems Being Tested Every Day

Now that the school year is underway, your systems are being tested in real time.

Pay attention. Look for recurring frustrations. Notice where confusion occurs. Identify processes that require too much effort.

Consider reviewing:

  • Enrollment procedures
  • Parent communication
  • Staff onboarding
  • Scheduling systems
  • Tuition collection
  • Classroom transitions

If something feels harder than it should, there may be an opportunity to improve the process.

The best systems are not necessarily the most complex. They’re the ones that create clarity, consistency, and efficiency.

Don’t Lose Sight of Your Financial Goals

With so much activity happening during this season, it’s easy to focus exclusively on daily operations.

But strong leaders keep one eye on the present and one eye on the future.

This is a great time to revisit your financial goals for the remainder of the year.

Review:

  • Revenue trends
  • Payroll costs
  • Profitability
  • Cash reserves
  • Budget performance
  • Outstanding balances

The decisions you make this fall will impact how you finish the year.

Financial awareness helps ensure those decisions are intentional.

Remember: The Year Isn’t Happening to You

Many owners enter the fall season feeling overwhelmed by everything competing for their attention.

Enrollment.

Staffing.

Parent communication.

Licensing requirements.

Classroom management.

The list never seems to end. But one mindset shift can make a tremendous difference.

The year isn’t happening to you. You are leading it.

Every day presents an opportunity to strengthen your systems, support your team, improve your business, and move closer to your goals.

The most successful child care owners aren’t necessarily the ones with fewer challenges. They’re the ones who consistently make progress despite them.

Keep Learning, Keep Growing

One thing the strongest leaders have in common is a commitment to continuous growth.

They seek new ideas. They learn from others. They invest in leadership development. They surround themselves with people who challenge them to think bigger.

Whether that learning comes through coaching, educational programs, podcasts, conferences, or peer relationships, continued growth often leads to better decisions and stronger outcomes.

The school year may have just begun, but there is still tremendous opportunity ahead.

Fall Success Is Built One Decision at a Time

September often feels like the start of a race.

But the truth is, success isn’t determined by a single moment. It’s built through hundreds of small decisions made throughout the season.

The decision to improve a process.

The decision to have an important conversation.

The decision to invest in your team.

The decision to review your numbers.

The decision to keep learning.

The decision to lead intentionally.

As the school year gets underway, take a moment to step back and assess where things stand.

Celebrate what’s working.

Address what isn’t.

Keep moving forward.

Because your fall success won’t be determined by what happened over the summer.

It will be determined by what you choose to do next.
