Looking for ways to create a bond with your new staff members while implementing your business values? Making them feel a part of something and instilling the sense of a team or child care family? Elissa Woodle, the owner of two large schools in SC, did just that. In today’s episode Elissa shares her tips for creating an amazing teacher orientation and effective mentorship program.

Elissa has run small centers and big centers. But she prefers running a big center because there are more resources to pull from. Elissa describes how they implemented the teacher orientation to acclimate incoming child care staff members. The orientation helps walk them through how the child care center operates each day. The teachers “become accustomed to our growth, our values, our goals, and our high expectations.”

At Elissa’s schools, once teachers have completed orientation, they migrate to a mentorship program. A senior mentor gives new staff “someone to bond with, somebody to grow a relationship with, and they have somebody to go to when they have struggles or they have wins.”

Elissa believes there are many tangible psychological benefits to having a mentor program.”When it comes to the confidence of these staff members they will go way beyond the call of duty and their job description, just because they have the confidence to be able to accomplish all tasks before them.”

A proper staff orientation and mentorship program can help your child care business maintain dedicated staff members and prevent frequent turnover.
